Smaller tiling projects are easier, especially if there are no awkward corners or angles which will need the tile to be shaped, and these can generally be carried out by a tiling novice without too much difficulty.

Cincinnati Tile – What Tile, Where?
As you read earlier, the type of tile you choose will depend on which room of your home you are installing it in. Putting the wrong type of tile in a room can have disastrous consequences when it comes to safety, design and room style. The right kind of tile however, can make a room look larger and more luxurious, as well as keeping the room cooler in warmer climates and ultimately saving you money on power bills as the air conditioning will probably not have to be used as often or for as long.
If you are still in any doubt about what type of tile to use after reading the information on the Cincinnati Tile website you should consult with a professional.
Cincinnati Tile – Bathroom
While there are some good quality bathroom carpets available, Cincinnati Tile believes that the most hygienic bathroom flooring option would be to use a ceramic tile. It is important that any flooring in a bathroom should be water and stain resistant, durable and easy to clean. A bathroom will typically reflect a person’s personality, so choosing ceramic tiles which compliments this is important. The tile should also match the other fixtures and fittings of the bathroom, and can also depict whether the room is an adult bathroom or one primarily used by children with the use of decorative tiles with patterns such as fish or plants on, etc.
Ceramic tile is not just available in plain, boring colors but comes in numerous designs and patterns. Cincinnati Tile always recommends choosing a tile which is slip resistant for bathrooms so that accidents are prevented and there are several ceramic tiles which are textured to add extra safety. It is also important when laying water and stain resistant ceramic tiles to use the proper grouting, as this can be prone to discoloration and mildew.
Cincinnati Tile Tip: When tiling the floor of a guestroom bathroom always try to use neutral colors and schemes which match the décor of the bedroom to help guests feel more at home. This is also true for en-suite bathrooms.
Cincinnati Tile – Kitchen
Cincinnati Tile knows that tiling a kitchen floor can be expensive, and this is because of a number of different factors; the size of the kitchen, the quality of the tile needed and the fact that so many borders are needed to ensure a neat finish against the cabinets. Because of the cost and the durability factor Cincinnati Tile recommends going for ceramic tiles with a glass tile border. This will give a luxury look but will be more cost effective and long-lasting than if you choose a porcelain tile.
Porcelain tiles look amazing but are prone to scratch and get damaged easily, so if your kitchen is a high foot-traffic area or you have a table and chairs which are moved about a lot, Cincinnati Tile would not recommend this option.
If your budget allows Cincinnati Tile also recommends choosing a tile and marble flooring option. Ceramic tiles which are designed to look like marble are a great inexpensive alternative, but real marble tiles will last a lifetime and will maintain their quality finish. Ceramic, glass, marble or porcelain tiles can also be used effectively on countertops and walls to add a fantastic finish to the kitchen. Cincinnati Tile would recommend that the tiles are installed by a professional tile fitter if you have no tile laying experience.
Cincinnati Tile Tip: For smaller kitchens make use of lighter color tiles to enhance the space and make the room look larger. Using the same tile on the walls will also expand the appearance of the room.
Cincinnati Tile – Living Room
There are numerous reasons why people choose to have floor tiles laid in a living room; they are cooler, easier to keep clean and can look more luxurious than carpet. They are also more practical in some living rooms where foot traffic is high and where carpet would wear out a lot quicker. Granite, ceramic or marble effect tiles would be the recommendation of Cincinnati Tile as these are more serviceable.
Cincinnati Tile would generally advise that muted tile colors are used in living rooms as bold, bright colors can look out of place if your style of furniture should change over time, and because floor tiling is not generally cheap to replace it can be impractical to use tiles which your design taste and style will outgrow.
Using good quality tiles for your living room floor gives you numerous options. Using two different colors or styles; one for the main flooring space and another for the borders can be affective. Another eye-catching option is to create a “rug” effect using mosaic tiles where the mosaic is used in specific areas where you would normally use a real rug, and then larger tiles are used for the remaining floor space.
Cincinnati Tile Tip: Avoid using tiles which have a glossy appearance, such as porcelain tiles, as these have a tendency to scratch easily.
Cincinnati Tile – Basement Carpet Tiles
Many people convert their basements into a room which can be used for more practical reasons other than just storage. In these instances they will typically have a floor covering other than the original concrete base. It is important to make a careful choice as to what flooring you will use in your basement and to keep in mind the effects of flooding, mildew or moisture. While granite tiles are one option in a basement they are not suitable for basements which have suffered from any of the aforementioned problems. In these instances there are carpet tiles available which are designed specifically for this eventuality.
Carpet tiles which have been specifically designed for basements or high moisture areas will have a rubber backing which makes it resistant to mildew, mold and moisture. They are also re-usable, so in the event of a flood they can be dried out and re-laid. There are two types of rubber backing tiles available, cushion rubber or hard rubber. Cincinnati Tile will recommend that the hard rubber version is used in basements if possible as the cushioned rubber has a tendency to absorb moisture.
Cincinnati Tile Tip: Cincinnati Tile always recommends that a thorough inspection of the floor is carried out before any additional flooring is laid, to prevent future problems with damp and mold.
Cincinnati Tile – Tile Installation
While it is sometimes preferable to hire a professional to install new tile flooring, it is also possible for it to be carried out yourself, so long as precautions and care are taken. Before laying any new floor tiles, Cincinnati Tile recommends that the area to be tiled is measured carefully, and that extra tiles are purchased to allow for any mishaps during installation. Extra tiles are also recommended for future use in the case of damage or stains.
Cincinnati Tile and Carpet Tile Installation: You will need to ensure that you have the following tools available prior to beginning laying carpet tiles: Measuring tape, double-sided carpet tape, carpenters square, chalk line and large scissors.
- Clean: Make sure that the floor has been cleaned thoroughly and the room has been emptied of any furniture.
- Locate the center: To find the center of a room measure each wall and mark at the halfway point. Use the chalk line to mark a line from each center point of the four walls, and the place the line meets at is the room’s center. This is where you will begin laying your tiles.
- Position tiles: Place the first tile at the point where the two lines meet, ensuring it is evenly places on both lines. If you are using dry-backed tiles lay double-sided tape around the walls of the room and along the chalk line. If you are using self-adhesive ones do not remove the adhesive backing paper yet. Place tiles on the floor, using the chalk line as a guide, making sure they fit snugly together.
- Edges: Tiles will have to be cut at the edge of the room. Cincinnati Tile recommends that you turn the tile to be cut upside down and position in beneath the previous whole tile, and make a mark. Using sharp scissors or suitable craft knife make a straight cut across the tile.
- Stick: when all the tiles are in position to your satisfaction the backing paper or carpet tape paper can be removed and the tiles stuck down.
Cincinnati Tile and Marble Tile Installation: You will need to ensure that you have the following tools available prior to beginning laying marble tiles: Gloves, glaze, cement mask, cement, putty knife, sponge, sand paper, tile spacer, adhesive, trowel and a wet saw.
- Clean: Make sure that the floor has been cleaned thoroughly and the room has been emptied of any furniture. Ensure that the floor surface is smooth and level, using sandpaper if needed. Make sure there is no debris or screws on the floor area.
- Locate the center: To find the center of a room measure each wall and mark at the halfway point. Use the chalk line to mark a line from each center point of the four walls, and the place the line meets at is the room’s center. This is where you will begin laying your tiles.
- Position Tiles: This is where you can get creative by laying the tiles down in the pattern you would like. Experiment until you are satisfied with the design. Start from the center of the room and work out towards the edges, placing tiles along the chalk lines first. Use the wet saw to cut tiles to size and shape if needed and use tile spacers between each tile to ensure a uniform fit.
- Stick: when you are happy with the design apply adhesive to each tile individually and place it back into its allotted position. Cincinnati Tile advises that you make sure the room is well ventilated at this point, as adhesive fumes can be potent. Leave for a day to let the adhesive completely dry.
- Cement: Carefully remove all spacers with the putty knife and grout between the tiles using the cement, making sure that gloves and a mask are used and the room is well ventilated. Remove any excess cement and let dry for a further day.
- Seal: Marble tiles need to be properly sealed with a glaze after installation to ensure protection from water damage.
Cincinnati Tile and Ceramic Tile Installation: You will need to ensure that you have the following tools available prior to beginning laying ceramic tiles: Tile cutter, tile spacers, and trowel.

- Stick: Using the trowel spread the mortar (Made up to manufacturer’s instructions) evenly on the floor beneath each tile individually. Put the tile onto the mortar, pressing firmly. Leave dry overnight if possible.
- Grout: Once the tiles are stuck in place, remove the tile spacers and spread the tile grout over the cracks, removing excess with a damp sponge and let dry for approximately twelve hours.
Cincinnati Tile advises that if you are in any kind of doubt as to your ability to lay your new tiles safely and without causing damage to them, your property or yourself, that you employ the assistance or services of a professional and have your tiles laid by someone who has experience. While this may not be the cheapest option, it is a lot cheaper than having to repair any damage caused by an inexperienced person or the expense of having to purchase yet more tiles to replace those damaged by being cut, shaped or fitted wrongly.
Cincinnati Tile – Tile Cleaning and Maintenance
Tiled flooring is one of the easiest types of flooring to maintain and keep clean. Cincinnati Tile has a few tips on how you can make this chore even easier and keep your floor tiles looking as good as new.
There are two types of ceramic tile; glazed and unglazed, with the glazed versions being shiny and coated and easier to clean, and the unglazed ones duller, uncoated and as such gather dirt and dust easier. Whichever type of tile you have, Cincinnati Tile recommends that they are cleaned thoroughly as and when needed to ensure a long and beautiful looking life.
Prior to cleaning your tiled floors sweep them thoroughly, paying extra attention to corners and edges. Once you have swept them it’s time to vacuum. You may be wondering why you need to vacuum as well as sweep, but sweeping will only cover the floor surface while vacuuming will make sure than any dirt and debris left behind is lifted from out of joins and the patterned texture of the tile.
There are numerous floor cleaning detergents available from stores, but Cincinnati Tile always recommends that you use simple tap water and not having the cloth or mop too wet. Dishwashing detergent or soap can also be added to the water if you like that nice fresh smell. If tiled floors are exceptionally dirty from food spills or pet stains use a 1 part water 1 part vinegar solution, but leave out any soap or detergent.
For excessive dirt an ammonia solution can be used, but Cincinnati Tile warns people not to use this on ceramic tiles as it can damage the surface of the tile and strip off the glaze. If you do use ammonia to clean other types of tile then a bucket of water and 2 tablespoons of ammonia is sufficient. Steam cleaning is a safe and effective way of cleaning all kinds of tile, as well as your tile manufacturers recommended tile cleaner.
Cincinnati Tile – Cleaning Grout
Over time grout will become discolored which can make the tiles appear dirty or messy. Cleaning grout can be a tedious job, but there are a few things you can do to make it a little easier.
- Try using simple soap, water and a toothbrush.
- An equal mix of hot water and vinegar in a spray gun can be effective. Spray the solution on the grout, leave for 5 minutes and wipe clean.
- Bleach can be used but it is important to ensure there are no other cleaning chemicals on the floor as a reaction can be caused. Spray the bleach on or use a cloth to apply. Leave for 5 minutes and wipe clean.
- The most effective method that Cincinnati Tile recommends is to use half a cup of hydrogen peroxide and 1 cup of water. Apply to the grout and wipe off after a few minutes for a deep clean.
If you have tiles or grout that stubbornly refuse to look clean no matter what you do to them or how long you scrub at them, it may be time for you to call in a professional floor cleaning company. While Cincinnati Tile can offer tips and advice on tile cleaning, we will always recommend that if you are in any doubt about what you are doing to consult someone who is experienced to avoid the possibility of your tiles being damaged.
